William McKinley High School’s Cheerleader coach Sue Sylvester tells glee club director Will Schuester that the glee club is required to send twelve members that are eligible to compete at Nationals. The cheerleading team is called The Cheerios and the glee club singers call themselves New Directions. Will instructs New Directions to sing Le Freak by Chic in school assembly, as a way to snag new members who will be eligible to compete in the Nationals. A sub-plot describes Rachel’s growing crush on Finn forces her to join the celibacy club. Unfortunately for her, Finn is also there with his girlfriend Quinn, and Quinn is head of the Cheerios. There is a face-off between Quinn and her cheerleader friends and Rachel, but Rachel holds her own and impresses Finn.
