Episode 3: “Acafellas”

Directed by John Scott. Written by Ryan Murphy. Aired on September 16, 2009.

Rachel questions glee club director Will’s choreography during a New Directions practice session, so, undeterred, Will goes off and creates his own all-male a capella group. He calls the new group The Acafellas, and believes that his work with them will improve his performance and help his self-belief. Football coach Ken Tanaka joins Will, along with woodshop teacher Henri St. Pierre and Howard, a co-worker of Will’s wife Terri, who is pregnant with their child. Unfortunately, Henri and Howard leave the group are replaced with glee club member Finn – who Rachel has a crush on, and footballer player “Puck” Puckerman. Typical of the crazy plotlines in Glee, previous glee club director Sandy Ryerson arranges for classical pop singer Josh Groban to witness their upcoming a capella show. Groban attends and enjoys their version of “I Wanna Sex You Up”, but says he’s only there to ask Sandy to stop stalking him! Good old Glee. These plots are comedy gold with a nice dash of drama thrown in for good measure.

While Will is gone on his a capella mission the glee club bring in Dakota Stanley, a famous choreographer, in the hope that they can make the Nationals. Typically, in-fighting between the Cheerios Cheerleaders and Rachel lead to the choreographer being fired and the glee club are as strong as ever. Cheerios coach Sue Sylvester is annoyed that the glee club is still a tight unit, but this leads to some of her cheerleaders arriving at valuable home truths about themselves. Will returns as a director/teacher to the glee club ad the whole crazy trip begins again!
